Frank Colahan: NYPD Blue, 2002

Frank Colahan is the unemployed construction worker husband of Michelle, who is the sister of Connie, one of the NYPD regulars. Michelle has been in detox in Chicago and is now in New York with her husband while he looks for work. She is pregnant.

Frank beats her up and she runs to Connie, but returns to Frank and is beaten up a second time. Connie has Frank arrested, but Michelle herself bails him out despite Connie's advice.

Michelle dies as a result of a further beating Frank gives her and the baby is born prematurely. Frank is arrested and conned into admitting his part in Michelle's death.

Nick turns in a wonderful performance, particularly in his last scenes, where he takes the thuggish Colahan and turns him around so that one feels sympathy for him.
