In this film that was made for children, Nick plays Steven Harris, a widower with a young son. Because he is so grief-stricken, he is terrified that Daniel will be hurt, and protects him in a way that stifles the little boy, who is a solitary kid anyway.
Daniel wants a pet of his own. Dad won't let him have one in case it dies, and so he wishes for one. The fact that he gets one isn't amazing. The fact that it's an elephant is. Through their dealings with Lumpy the elephant, Steven and Daniel finally manage to understand each other and find contentment.
Nick's portrayal of bewildered, grief stricken Steven is touching and delicately drawn, but it isn't for this that I will remember his performance. The sequence where Steven first comes face to face with Lumpy is one of the funniest pieces of slapstick I can recall seeing.
The Impossible Elephant is more than a kids' movie. It's charming look at relationships.
