Tom McLaren: Vertical Limit, Sony Pictures Entertainment - 2000

Tom McLaren is an experienced mountaineer and outdoorsman who has turned his avocation into a successful business, arranging Himalayan climbing parties for well-heeled clients.

Pragmatic, cheerfully earthy, responsible. However, dealing with the spoiled rich who hire him to equip and oversee their climbs has required development of a sense of tact (which doesn't always hold), and creates what turns out to be a dangerous flaw.

When his expertise comes into conflict with the demands of his client, the entrepreneur trumps the mountaineer, and Tom's delay in doing what he knows should be done allows his party to be overtaken by disaster -- the brunt of which is borne by Tom himself.
