He hadn't been first in his class at the Academy. That distinction had gone to Ron Crowley, as it had to his father before him. Vancouver wasn't a very old city, but it remembered.

He never thought he wanted very much; maybe that was the problem. Get away from home, join up, don't turn into an alcoholic, never take a bribe. Walk a straight line. It wasn't much. He wasn't asking for miracles; fame, fortune. Happiness. Not even a wife, although he kept trying.

On odd days, anyhow.

Every once in awhile he slipped. Got involved with his snitch, hit someone a little too hard. Smoked too much. But he never meant to. Hurt anyone.

He wasn't Ron Cowley, after all. He never lived up to his father's name.
