To love someone beyond the grave, what a thoroughly stupid thing to do. It was a choice, of course; everything was a choice. Thats where He had gotten it wrong from the beginning.
Humanity was to be admired for that alone its ability to choose. Its guaranteed right to choose. And the perfect odds for it choosing badly.
This man wanted what he could never have. Everything he wanted, he could never have; it was a passion for him. Max smiled and watched him put down the telephone. Did he want it because he couldnt have it, or was he denied everything he ever wanted?
Is it good because God wills it, or does God will it because it is good? The smile leeched out through his eyes and faded. And would solving that riddle the explain the meaninglessness of anyones life?
Even those who would never die?
Lucifer, the first son, beloved in all things. He turned his collar up against the cold, wet wind. It was a reflexive and unnecessary gesture. Hed been in the world too long now not to begin to fit in.
Desire in all its forms called to him. He wasnt omniscient, but it was a small thing to be anywhere he wished, see anything he looked for. There, he was right there, the man who wanted so much he burned with it, there in that room, and dark, and lonely, the only light that fire, that love, that need.
He went to him, he had no choice. Angels had no choice, they were created to serve.
