The New Orleans air was thick and rich with the perfume of summer. Alex sighed, lulled by the false calm the heat created. The air was heavy and moist, so much so that he could hardly breath. But that was all right. Around him lay the bayou, and here on the balcony of the colonial mansion he felt somehow shielded from the world. He lay in the sun as a Creole serving girl waited by the door, ready to serve at a whim. He had no idea what was going on, but he was too weary to care, running had taken its toll on him and hed been near exhaustion when hed run into this mansion in the middle of nowhere. Somehow the servants welcomed him in and put him in the master bedroom with no questions asked.
Here, he felt as if he were drunk on the calming comfort he had found; whether it be false or real was no matter. The point was that he could rest. He had been pretty badly off in Washington, ready to drop, both out of sight, and physically. He'd go soon enough, as soon as he was physically able to anyway, just now though hed bask in the beauty of the peace hed found.
A sudden motion -- or shadow of one -- stirred him. Hed had this feeling before, one of being observed but not threatened. No matter, he was ready; whoever this was, it was no enemy of his. He didnt know where this conviction came from, but he knew. Gently he settle his mind, and again went back to basking in the sun.

From one of the upper rooms Cory watched him as he sipped his thick wine. This stranger -- Alex, the servants had called him -- was indeed tempting. He reminded Cory of himself, but the man was older, and mortal at that. He was up to something, but what Cory couldnt tell. For now he would just bide his time. Silently he smiled into his wineglass. Whoever this man was, he would certainly be worth the time. Last night he had reacted to Cory's stalking. What was odd was that Alex had sensed him at all. Cory shifted positions better to view Alex -- cautious though he knew he was hidden by the shadows of the thick drapes -- and he grinned like a Cheshire cat as he did.
Somehow Alex had sensed his motion; his eyes swept the bayou as Cory moved. "I'll strike soon my dear," Cory thought, "and when I do, you won't resist me anymore than you resisted my hospitality." Raising his glass, he turned on his heel and moved away from the window, undressing as he went. This heat wave was too warm for what he wore; he'd have to change into something more accommodating, perhaps after a turn in the hot tub. Pity he couldn't invite his newfound friend.
